Beauty Between Cracks; exploring Elswick through photography and cyanotype

After working with Newcastle College ESOL Department for The Covid Age project, we couldn’t help but notice the potential of the plain white walls in disused lobby of the former Cruddas Park Shopping Centre, which serves as the college’s entrance. We worked with students to develop a project that focussed on finding beauty in unlikely places, examines our relationship to urban spaces, and questions how humans, cities, and nature can positively coexist.

This project is funded by Arts Council England and Newcastle Council Arts Development Team.

Outputs

This project is in its early stages so this is all to be confirmed, but our plans are;

Cyanotype and Photography Series; a comprehensive body of work exploring the visuals of Cruddas Park and surrounding areas

Writing Collection; this will be combination of prose and audio recorded spoken word responding to project themes and the work

Exhibition; a curated, long-term exhibition will be mounted on the walls of Riverside Dene for students and residents to enjoy

Online Gallery; as well as transforming Riverside Dene/former Cruddas Park Shopping Centre, we will showcase the work online
